HOW CAN I HELP?
You'll have seen in the news that GCSE maths has changed, and is now more difficult than it has been. If your child can achieve a Grade 4 in GCSE maths at school, this is considered to be a 'pass' grade and means that they don't (currently) have to do resit maths post-16. A 'strong pass' is a grade 5 and, for some college courses, a grade 5 or even 6 may be essential.
Tutoring for GCSE can start in years 9, 10 or 11. Starting in year 9 or 10 gives the opportunity to provide in-depth, high-impact support whilst tutoring in year 11 can give a final boost to confidence and exam grades through structured revision.
KEY STAGE 3 MATHS
Getting the basics right in the first few years of secondary school can really build confidence and make GCSEs much easier in years 10 and 11. Many children switch off from maths at this stage as a means of preserving their self-esteem when they're struggling to see progress. Giving your child tutoring at this age can really boost their self-confidence and motivation.
iGCSE is a little bit different from GCSE and includes some areas of maths which aren't covered in GCSE e.g. using differentiation to find turning points and for problems involving velocity and acceleration. Yorkshire Tutoring can provide specialist tuition for iGCSE maths for your child.
Research shows that students can make great progress during the academic year, but they then lose some of their skills over the summer holiday period. Summer Boost helps to keep skills fresh or to provide an extra boost for the beginning of the next school year.
GCSE MATHS (RESIT)
If your son or daughter is resitting GCSE maths at College or as part of an Apprenticeship, they might benefit from some extra help to obtain a pass grade this year. This is particularly important if they want to progress to a Level 3/Advanced course the following year.
Your son or daughter may be feeling a little daunted if they attend one of the local schools that enter their pupils for GCSE Statistics in Year 10 or 11. Yorkshire Tutoring can help and many of the statistics topics overlap with GCSE maths so it will boost your son or daughter's confidence all round.
FUNCTIONAL SKILLS MATHS
Your son or daughter may not be ready for GCSE and may be following a Functional Skills Maths course. With Functional Skills, students can often 'do the maths' but they struggle to access the questions as they are very wordy. We can help with this.
NUMERICAL REASONING TEST PREPARATION
Many Graduate Entry and Professional jobs now require you to pass an Assessment Centre which can include a Numerical Reasoning Test. Yorkshire Tutoring can work with you to improve your performance on this test and improve your chances of getting your dream job!
Primary Maths is changing - again. You might have heard your child's teacher talking about Mastery Maths, bar modelling or Shanghai Methods and noticed a return to more traditional teaching and calculation methods. Levels have disappeared and we now have 'expected standards' instead. This can be very confusing for children and parents (and teachers!). Why not support your child with personal tutoring whilst they're in the primary phase so that they get a head start for secondary school?
